I am missing my last job as a note taker at Wolverhampton University, working for disabled students. They were a diverse lot, with many different interests, and while I had to take the rough (a zero hours contract, sometimes paying more for parking than I earned and third year maths for computing) with the smooth (language development in deaf babies in hearing families and hearing babies in Deaf families, taking notes for this whilst I was pregnant). I miss the students and being able to cheer up, encourage, quietly fade into the background when required to if they had an invisible disability and didn't want their friends to know, learn just how hard it can be just to be there on time sometimes if your taxi is late and the wheelchair access is via a broken lift. I miss being on the campus and especially, having access to the library. I still have my staff card, but am too honest to try and use it elsewhere. Actually, I'm just too rubbish at lying and not looking shifty. If I had the chance and I could wing it, I would.
I haven't graduated yet from the last educational establishment I earned a degree from and somewhere, in a dark cupboard under the stairs and a pile of student magazines, there lies my degree certificate from 1997. Yes, before most students were born. I should get them to send it to me really, but I always fancied walking down the Senate House steps like my friends - just never had the spare cash to justify travelling, hiring a gown and paying for dinner. I know, I could get some more useful qualifications and a job that actually pays actual money and then I could go. Still struggling with step one though. Last time I applied for a job, there were 63 candidates and I wasn't shortlisted....
I volunteer and have been asked to volunteer for the same organisation, but they didn't know it was me, if you know what I mean. It's much more fun anyway and they have to be nice to you if they want you to stay. Unless you are where the buck stops.
There is always the Co-op, or Tesco's, or Asda, or Sainsbury's - the sky's the limit. Sky! That's it! Do they need engineers? They are very busy putting up dishes around here. I did genetic engineering. Does that count? It was a long time ago.
